Reading in Key Stage 1

Oxford Reading Tree reading books are used across Key Stage 1 with a variety of fiction and non-fiction books. The books are graded by reading stages and each stage introduces new sounds and red words (words that cannot be sounded out e.g. the, said some).

Books are to be read twice before a child changes them with their class teachers. The child reads the book twice to become familiar with new words and to increase their fluency and understanding of the book. Each child reads and discusses their reading book weekly at school with their teacher.
